Southwest Virginia Wolf Trap — The Millwald Theatre

Southwest Virginia Wolf Trap

As an affiliate of Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts, Southwest Virginia Wolf Trap brings Wolf Trap’s arts-integrated professional development to classroom teachers, caregivers, and families in our region. Through hands-on, developmentally appropriate experiences in drama, music, dance, and puppetry, Wolf Trap’s approach helps young children build early literacy skills and the curiosity and problem-solving at the heart of science, technology, engineering, and math.

Learning through the arts, from the very start.

Sponsored by the Millwald Theatre, Southwest Virginia Wolf Trap is an affiliate of Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts, a program of Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts. Using Wolf Trap’s model, teaching artists partner with Pre-K and Kindergarten teachers to weave drama, music, dance, and puppetry into everyday learning.

Wolf Trap’s arts-integration strategies help young children build language, early literacy, math, and social skills while giving teachers new tools they can keep using long after the residency ends.

How a residency works

1

Plan together

A Wolf Trap teaching artist meets with classroom teachers to plan arts-based lessons tailored to their curriculum, their classroom, and their learning goals.

2

Teach together

The teaching artist leads and co-teaches sessions in the classroom, modeling strategies that bring the curriculum to life.

3

Keep it going

Teachers practice the strategies on their own, so the arts become a lasting part of how their classroom learns.
